THE POWER OF CHOICE
I had spent much time and energy in making my daughter knowledgeable when she was a baby, a toddler, and a child. Now, is she smart? Yes, I think so. Is she intelligent? Well, I would imagine so: she is now an attorney. Then, is she wise? That I don’t know. Wisdom has to do with how she is living her life, how she is going to raise her baby, and how she is going to face her new life challenges ahead, especially now that she has her own family. Wisdom is something that she has to self-intuit—something that cannot be taught. The parents’ role is to make the child smart, which is the first step, just as Lao Tzu, the ancient Chinese sage, once said: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.” Making your baby smart is the first big step that you can and should take, as well as the first gift that you can give to your baby. I took my first big step, and now it is my daughter’s turn to take her first big step. The journey towards wisdom is long and winding, with many detours and even missteps. Hopefully, she will find her way and reach her wisdom destination
Yes, you can teach and train your baby to become smarter. You can help your baby develop his brain, and you can even show your baby how to think. However, you may or may not be able to make your baby become wise: as a parent, you can only provide the tools, the raw materials, and, of course, the best wishes; the rest is up to your baby when he grows up.
